Illustrating is pure joy!
The diversity and intention of the different writers is so varied that it always allows an adventure for me. I enrole in the characters feelings. Its very much, to me, like acting. I have the delightful experience of “living out” the story as if it were a movie. I take the camera of my imagination, seeing the scenes from ground level or treetops.
There is so much to discuss with the author before I begin, I do however, usually upon first read, get an impression that I sketch out. I work with people in my neighborhood, as well as authors who live thousands of miles away.
As an art instructor, I have encouraged others who’s medium is less usual for illustration, to try out the field, offer their work to stories. Im thinking particularly about a collage artist who’s work is very story telling.
